Default Coil OK but no Spark??

Hello all, I can't figure this one... (Engine - 1988 883) won't fire.
Was running last evening, fired her this morning and she started misfiring - stalled, fired - ran like ****, won't fire.
I confirmed Coil and Spark with a Spark Tester (Snap-On Clear tester) placed in the Plug Wire and then to the Plug. There is spark showing in the tester.
I have removed the plugs and held them against the head -No Spark - even though the tester is lighting up. ???
If I hold the Plug 1/4" away from the Head, the Spark jumps nice and strong from the plug to the head.
I am very confused as to why when the plug is physically grounded to the head there isn't spark - but the spark jumps when not making contact??

All other electrical seem to work properly -

Any thoughts?
Thanks in Advance!

Jeez.... ya think I would have done so already but I haven't. Seems unlikely both would fail at the same time... no?

Can't hurt - thanks for the reply.

Yep - If the plugs are shorted internally, you'll get no spark across the gap, but it will certainly spark to the head when held slightly away.

That's the ticket!
Can't believe I lost a day in the wind and was ready to rip into all the wiring over bad plugs...
Should know to check the simple stuff 1st.

Thanks again.
