Default motorcycle on lift for two+ years

My motorcycle has been sitting on the lift for just over two years, dismantled sufficiently ready for new cams to be installed, is there anything to be aware of before buttoning up and riding off? For example, will the lifters need attention?

Off topic slightly...
Two years? That’s nothing. I’ve been working on a bank of two-stroke carbs for 4 years. I can picture them now, partly disassembled, labelled and organised, sitting forlornly on a workbench. One day...

Ha Ha Ha Ha...

Four Years? That's nothing...

My Sportster was disassembled & sitting on a cement block for 12-years...

You can read about its resurrection & life after that in My Motorcycle Chronicles (see link below)...

As to the lifters, I would probably give them a good cleaning & soak them in new oil before reinstalling (since you have it open)...

I think I would change the oil & make sure you have new gasoline...

Maybe check the battery for charge level:
http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/techtalk:evo:elec01

If it's been in a controlled-heat environment, I would not think other things have deterioriated...

Good grief! 12 years!! That makes me feel "young"! haha

Thanks for the heads up there IXL2Relax.

These Sportster motors sure sound robust.

Like Mr Relaxed said, soak the lifters in oil.
I would also treat all the moving parts you see with some
new assembly lube.

Also get the mice out of the exhaust pipes
