Don't overheat the cable when soldering the copper ends on and don't sweat shrink wrapping the ground all the way to the end. It's just moisture trap and not necessary on the ground.

I must be really lucky with batteries. The original battery on my 03 lasted over 6 years. In fact the only reason I replaced it is because I was riding out to Sturgis that year and didn't want to take any chances. I replaced it with an H-D battery and believe it or not, that battery just crapped out a few weeks ago. 10 years! And I never, ever disconnect it over the winter or trickle charge it (yeah, I'm lazy....). So I'm probably going to get another H-D battery since I've had such good luck with them in the past.
