I "find it disturbing this thread has gone on for SOOOOOOO long". Too bad there isn't a box to check for that. It has shown how inflated and delicate and easily bruised some peoples' egos and self images are.

The general public don't even know what brand a bike is unless it has the factory emblems on it. I rode a sanitized Sportster for decades. It had custom paint and everything that said Harley on it had been changed. Unless the person looking at it had owned a Harley or worked on them, they normally would not even know one if they was looking at it. Even the Harley fans in the restaurants would stand around, bending over to look at the writing on the cam cover, clutch cover and anywhere else some writing might be. When I would come out and get on it, they would ask what kind of bike it was. The only way most of the general public could even identify a Harley, much less tell what model of Harley it is, would be the emblems. Take all the emblems off and wear and Indian T-shirt and they would be totally confused.

I gave my Sportster to my son and bought a Can Am with 115 horses from the factory. Very few of those in the area I live in. People still come up and ask what kind of motorcycle it is, even though it says Can Am right across the front end. They never heard of one before. The general public knows almost nothing about motorcycles of any kind. A lot of them go to the Harley dealerships and buy the clothes, but they couldn't identify a bare Harley engine if they had to.

There are around 20+ HD shops in Japan which is about the size of California. That speaks volumes of truth re: HD vs. jap bikes. Some shops can't keep enough Sportsters on their floors more than month or so. For the rest of my life the only thing Japanese I'll ride is a mail order bride.
