I know that the original question - will misalligned cams cause hard starting? seems to have been ruled out here. Thought it might help someone though to add my experience of that.
When I took the cam cover off on my 76 one time (needed welding after a chain break) I thought I'd managed to keep the cams nicely in place. When I put it back together it was a real pig to start - was taking 15-20 goes on the starter. When it stsrted it ran but sounded very different somehow, kind of deeper sound. No spluttering or farting but sounded wrong. Didn't try riding it. Working on the time honoured principle of what did I do last? I figured cams. Took off the cover again and sure enough alignment was a toith out. Don't remember which cam. Refitted them as per stickies and all was good.
So with cams out of line starting will be a pig but it may well start, mine did.

Also verify you have a 5 ohm coil that is needed for points.
Else the points will get burned.

It could easily be a 3ohm OEM coil, they look the same.

5ohm for points.

W/r/t mis-timed cams:
All XL etc. (1929-73 45; K, KH) cams have 28 teeth, driven at 1/2-speed. Each tooth = 25.7° (720° ÷ 28°). Retarding the #2 cam will greatly reduce cranking compression, advancing it the reverse. Mis-timing the #2-3 will make the front and rear cylinder psi very different. The #1 and/or #4 are more difficult to diagnose.

Good points about the error that 1 tooth would make.

But actually the pinion gear has 18 teeth and drives a 36 tooth gear which reduces the cam set to half crank speed and then that shaft turns the 28 tooth gears.
But Yes a 1 tooth error produces the same result, unless the 1 tooth error is between the pinion and 36t gear

True, thanks, duh, trying to contain 2 thoughts at once does that!
