Question 1988 xlh1200//// dynatech2000i shorting/grounding help

hello name jesse i have a 1988 xlh1200 sportster with a dynatech2000i..i had my buddy program it for me and we noticed with the ignition installed it was grounding out on the nose cone/cam cover ...well we them looked for any shorts bare wire etc. we found nothing.. so we put the cover back on then took it for a qwick test ride ran great....but now it wont start back up so we took the cover back off and it started...does any one know what would be making this dynatech2000i ground out that would make a little spark if i moved my small flatthead inbetween the cover and ignition.....please any help will be awsome

Did you check the wires that run thru the cam cover to the coil & other components?

It's likely that one of the wires is scraped or cut or pinched and causing a short.

Of course, if the unit has age (been in operation for awhile) there's the possibility that it has developed and internal short somewhere (that's less likely).

Use an ohm meter to test for shorts. Clamp the BLACK lead to the negative battery post and then use the RED lead to test for shorts on the body of the unit. Then remove the connections for any of the wires from the devices they normally connect with and check for a short to ground on any of those individual wires (while disconnected from their devices) - like those going to the coil, going to VOES, etc. Be sure to wiggle the wires to test for intermittent shorts.

First, I would look and see if the cup is hitting the ignition. The pickup on the new ignition may have been assembled at the factory in the wrong location and gotten trashed by the cup. Another easy check would be to put the old one back on and see if that is shorting. If not, you could have a defective unit, or you may have wired it wrong (happens to the best of us). Was there a problem with the old ignition, or did you just want a different curve?

It's worth giving Dynatek a call. I called them when I received mine because I had a question about the part number; I wanted to make sure I bought the correct one for my '86. The guy I spoke with was super helpful and I could tell he had a wealth of knowledge about the product.
