bdugle......WELCOME to The Forum

I believe your pinging is probably timing related. Post your question in the Conversion forum, as well as perusing the threads on custom timing maps from forum member Turbota.

I run an oil cooler on my 05....it helps some....but not that much. I don't believe the XR oiling system will retro-fit ours.

Good luck but get that pinging solved.

So far, so good. I bought my 2005 XL883 this spring with 10K miles on it from the original owner without asking what oil he used. I changed all the fluids and I put AMSOIL 20W/50 V-Twin Motorcycle Oil in the engine and primary. I just changed the engine with 15K miles on it and it was down 1/2 quart. I'm pleased. It never overheated in the hottest summer on record for this section of southwest Virginia.
At the same time, I replaced the clutch spring plate (grenade) with stock plates and kept the original diaphragm clutch plate. While other riders who have done this job report "chirping" from the clutch pack when engaging the clutch, I haven't experienced this during the first 2K miles.
I'm happy and if nothing changes, I will continue using this stuff. I've used AMSOIL products in my other motorcycles, trucks and cars for almost 30 years with no problems at all. (I hope I didn't jinx myself!)

Stock 2005 883C, 20K now, 14K when I got it. 92 octane is all I run. Most of my riding is done at 65 or less, occasionally get it up to 70+ but not for extended periods. No tach or temp gauge. Usually change the oil every spring, so the intervals vary, and last spring it didn't happen, but I've only had to add oil between changes once, and that was after a lot of mountain running (8,000 to 10,500 ft elevation) where she's really working.

No link?

To answer the questions.

1. Bike year and cc's (please indicate if an international model) and mileage.

2009 XL1200C ~23,000 miles.

2. Stock, Stage 1, cc upgrade (if so to what), or other internal mods (heads, cams, etc.). If converted, please indicate mileage since conversion. Stage 1, V&H Short Shots, SE Air Cleaner, oil routed through back of A/C and Dyno tuned.

3. Compression ratio, if other than stock/Stage 1?

N/A

4. If you've done a conversion what route did you go (HD/SE, Basic DIY, NRHS, V-Twin, other)?

N/A

5. Any gearing changes (primary or final).

No

6. What octane do you run?

91 to 93, mostly 93.

7. ECM or Fuel Management System change?

Dyno tune.

8. If you run a temp gauge, what temps do you most often see? Are you seeing temps over 230? If so, under what conditions?

Usually see 200°F, most on very hot day in heavy stop and go traffic was about 220°F.

9. Do you often run for multiple miles straight at 4000rpms+ or 70mph+? If so please explain.

Yes, 50 mile one way commute, several stretches of a few miles above 70, 80-85+ for one 9 mile stretch traffic allowing. In the mornings I can usually do the 50 miles in 45 minutes or less. takes 50-55 minutes most trips home, a small town with a lot of traffic lights, poorly timed in between. If no traffic I sometimes get a ton+ for a while.

10. Do you excessive oil? Remember, HD says 1qt/1000miles is legitimate. If so how much? And do you notice it more after any particular "kind" of riding?

Nothing noticeable between oil changes every 5000 miles.

11. Any other information you feel may be helpful.
