Default Taillight Problems '96 Sporty

Good afternoon,
I've replaced my taillight three times in the last week. All connections are tight and whatnot. Any ideas on or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Is the fender good and tight / solid? Vibrations or loose fenders will beat the filaments right out of bulbs.

Hardtail is rough ion them too. They take a lot more shock on a hardtail than they do if they are on springs.

Some of the automotive places sell heavy duty bulbs, but I don't know if that would help or not.

In addition to the above checks, try thoroughly cleaning the socket with contact cleaner, then apply some dielectric grease to the bulb base when you re-install a new bulb...

I'm guessing vibration. Probably have something loose in the mount or fender. I know when I mount my flags for a PGR ride, two 3'x5' flags that shake the back end pretty good at 65 MPH, I usually come back with no tail lights working. I've tried Heavy Duty (they are a little better) and LED (usually end up with a pile of little parts and dust in the tail light housing)

If you have short shocks it could easily be that the wires are stripped/worn from the tire rubbing against them.

The aftermarket assemblies are pretty crappy. Had the same happen on my 97, saved the oem, while putting a non oem on, that failed as well. The same way. So I took the original, drilled out the extruded studs, helicoiled it and install grade 8 studs I cut at home, used red loctite. Taillight has stayed put for years now.



You get the idea.
This allowed me to properly tighten the taillight to the fender. No more issues.

You may need to shim the housing to the fender so it draws down properly when tightened.
