To keep from over-dwelling the coil on the following cylinder.
Increasing dwell beyond "enough" just makes un-necessary heat in the coil.

Just a thought, is there anything preventing stealing the known good carb offa' the Rubbermount to "loan" to the IH?

I mean, I'd think it'd be nice to rule out one component while shaking down a new bike...
