Most of the air filters, I've seen, (factory replacement) are cotton fiber, not paper. The owner's manual (on my "06) says you can wash them out 2-3 times before replacing. I opted for a K&N.

OK, thanks y'all!

I looked a bit and found another reference in a different forum to blue rubber being what they used in the earlier production of the screamin' eagle filters.

Supposedly those had with quality issues, how could it be different :-)

But what I understand is that those can be washed and reused, but not oiled - so that's what I'll do as long as it seems to last...

Bottom line: I am happy, all good, it became pretty clean also - thanks a lot!

Only my wife did not like that thing in the kitchen sink.....pffffffft :-)

In 2004, H-D switched from K&N to an unamed brand of filter element in the SE high flow package. The filter media had the longivity of toilet paper. I do not know/recall when the person who did the out sourcing came to their senses/were over-ruled/fired.

The main issue with the stock ham can was limited open area to the stock element. The stock backplate on pre 04 models could be easily modified for more flow through the stock element.

k&n has two sizes, one being wider, ask me how i know. anyway, no issues, just made some conical stand-off's to space the cover out. i also modified the cover to the early style cans with the lower section on the bottom opened up. hd tucked the cover to abate noise for epa.
drilling holes in the back cover is iffy at best.

I drilled holes in the leading and trailing ends of the backplate and cover and it greatly improved airflow.
I'd still be running it but I despise the ham can.

maybe at low speeds. if you look at how the air flows planar to the plate, it would be a feat to make it turn 90* the faster you go. you would fair better to run exposed media. with the surface area of the filter, not much of any vacuum pull from the carb outside the media.

#1 with bustert, I would have thought that if you drill holes in the back, you would need an air-scoop to get that air to go into the airbox at speed.

as mr. 506 said, a trailing edge scoop could increase flow into the can. this is the can off the 01 sport and is a copy of the 74ch.
