Never had any issue with them riding the bike (down the center line, on the shoulder or approaching a stop sign). They definitely "wake up" those not paying attention.

Same in the US except we have started putting them on the center line of some roads in addition to the shoulders

I haven't experienced any problems with them either. More of a problem are the `tar snakes' (crack repair) and the `chip and seal' (tar with a gravel layer - turns asphalt into a gravel road until it settles into the pavement). Sometimes I think the DOT is trying to find ways to kill motorcyclists.

THE rumble strips over here have helped keep me between the lines in the dark with blowing snow.

In addition to road spots, the coating also plays a big role, and problems with it are also often.

I worked the night shift for more than 20 years. I had a co-worker who had a rather long commute via interstate highway. On certain mornings when he was particularly tired he'd comment before starting home "...this is going to be a rumble strip morning." It wasn't so much that he fell asleep as the long drive - while tired - easily lulls one into inattention and it's easier to drift out of your lane. Hitting that strip at 70-90 mph sure shocks you back to consciousness though!

I HATE hitting them accidently when taking a turn a tad wide or trying to avoid some obstacle like a dead animal, but otherwise, I think they're the best thing in highway safety in my lifetime. They are an annoyance to us, but we will NEVER KNOW how many crashes they've prevented by people like my former co-worker. I've never had an issue with them on a bike. The annoyance they can be in a car is well worth their value for the intended purpose in my book.

Tar snakes are a P.I.A. That said, I still prefer them to the CRACKS in the pavement the tar snakes fill.

I don't have much issue with rumble strips. I have more of an issue with the rain grooves in some pavements, the ones that run long ways with the road. Most bikes feel squirrely with them.

Exactly. Most trouble I have had is with the linear tread tires.
