I can't put into words how damn glad I am that I found this forum AND read this thread when I did !
+/- 700 mi on my new to me '02 after a $700 trip to the dealership for a tire to tire inspect & fix it (starting with brake pads) trip.....and i'll be dipped in chyt if on random inspection tonight, my neg. cable wasn't finger-tight and my pos. cable was 1/2 a wrench-turn loose......

I guess if I want someone I can TRUST to work on it, i'll have to get up off my old arse and do it my friggin' self from now on!

Crisis (and new battery or at least cable purchase) averted by the skin of my wristwatch !!

I learned the hard way. A few years ago right after doing some maintenance on my Sporty I rode to meet up with a bunch of people in one of my HOG chapters for a Polar Bear ride. The destination was about 100 miles from home on a nice place along the Susquehanna River north of Harrisburg PA. As is typical for me I was the last person to leave.

As I went to start my bike as the last person was pulling out it turned over for a second and then quit. When I tried again it would not turn over and all the lights would go out. After several attempts (how does one define an idiot - expecting a different result when trying the same thing???) I gave up.

I reached for my tools which were in my saddlebag only to realize I left in a hurry without putting the saddlebags back on.

Ticked off and about ready to push the bike into the river I poked around the starter and what I could see of the cables and I noticed that the ground cable moved in a way it shouldn't so I moved it to the left tightening up the connection and it started right up.

And the secondary moral of this story (thank you, Chris) is NEVER ride without basic tools.

Wait, who said I have morals?

Yes, and make sure those battery terminals are tight whenever working around the battery!

I suspect what happened is I had tried to move the cable because it was in my way when I was working on something on the right side of the bike and accidently loosened it.

As you get older you can say that you forgot you loosened it!

Recently had something similar happen on my XB12R. Several months ago I had the stator and regulator replaced and then the battery died (it was the original from 2009). I replaced the battery, and _thought_ I tightened the terminal screws down.

Weeks later on my way to work, the check engine light came on and went off several times (similar to what happened when my stator died). When I checked the codes, it was a low battery warning and I rode hoe and it happened again, WHen I took the seat off, and started the bike, I noticed a bunch of sparks from the terminal and saw the issue.

At least I caught it before it melted the terminal.

I work with this old guy, one of the most knowledgeable people I know, and he is stickler for tight battery terminals. Bless his heart and his pet mouse squeaky.

My two cents...take your jewelry off when stick your fingers in the battery area. Yes I should of known better, Especially since I used to be a former UH-1 mechanic; no jewelry allowed. So, the bike cranked once then died, immediately I get off the bike and start feeling for loose connections. Yup, wedding ring made contact with positive terminal and now I have a permanent ring scar. It was definitely hilarious to my buddies.

I am VERY married, but have not worn a ring in decades...hazardous as a mechanic and as an electrician.

BTW, I have been preaching about battery connections for years

They broke us of the ring habit back in the Air Force. I was an electronics tech back then. One of the guys didn't listen, but what happened to him had nothing to do with electricity.

For sake of tight space, we had bunks three high in the barracks. the bunk poles are just pipes, and no cap on top. One guy jumped out of his top bunk holding the top of the pipe for balance. His ring got caught on it and skinned his finger. It was a mess. Like you, I am very married too, but I never wear any jewelry. Wouldn't improve my looks anyway... LOL
