I use the standard yellow foam cylinder type earplugs when wearing a half helmet. But to avoid them poking out, I cut them in half. Cuts down on wind noise a lot but you can still hear normal traffic noises with no problem, and the speakers on the road king. Full face I don't bother with because it cuts down by itself.

My suggestion is you can use a helmet for your safety purpose because It is necessary to use, but if you want to protect your hearing from wind noise and other sources then you need to use custom ear plugs because custom earplugs will fit your ears and it will give you 100% hearing protection. Every motorcyclist needs to protect hearing while riding otherwise they will put into a huge hearing loss problem, as a result, they will suffer tinnitus.
Noone wants to get tinnitus problem because it will kill you day by day. And you won't live a good life. I love riding as well I was suffering from hearing loss because I never used any hearing protection devices but when I noticed my hearing problem is getting worse day by day then I decided to use custom earplugs because only custom earplugs will fit our ears. I was googling and found some hearing protection company are given below http://www.northtxhearing.com/hearing-protection.html and Big Ear Inc. I have checked their all blogs and got a lot of information about hearing protection. If you visit their website then you will get a lot of information as well.

I always wore ear plugs under my Full face helmets on longer rides. They really don't have to be custom made, but the soft foam ones don't work. I had some from work that seemed to have putty in them, and you could block out nearly all wind noise. They also make some that are moldable to your ear, look like a white putty. Cheap as well! I had tinnitus for years, but have been wearing hearing aids for about 3 years now and it's gone! Hearing aids are the cats a$$....if you can afford them or if your insurance will help. Mine are courtesy of Uncle Sam, through the VA.

The 3M foam plugs I wear are NRR 33.

They need to be used properly to achieve that, there are YouTube videos on how to properly wear ear plugs, most don't do it correctly.
