Default Blow by

Was reading on here something about the amount of engine oil you put in after service should be less than stated in the manual to prevent blow by. Can any one tell me in layman's terms what blow by is and what the correct amount of oil use in a 2004 883c.I had a little too much bourbon when I read about it on here and can't remember where I found it. Thanks
