Most cafe mods were cosmetic even back in the proverbial day.

An Evo Sportster is what those old Britbike grenades (I say this with love, I have Triumphs and Norton Commandos too) should have been in the engine department. They are beautiful, they are fun, they are delicate junk that frags randomly. Evo Sportsters have far better engines.

A Sporty engine does nicely in a Featherbed frame and looks right at home. It's like a vintage motor without the sloppy machining, with fewer taper joints, and with good top end life.

Eh, have a look at the shift mechanism on the four speeds Evos - more slop than a week of dysentery!
It's the agricultural weight that engenders the durability (I say this with love, I have Norton Commandos too).
But they are still fun though.

I don't bother with the four speeds after sorting out fragged customer bikes though I'd take one if it were absurdly cheap. The insanely stupid alternator design is all bad and the MoCo fools who approved it should be disposed of by scaphism.

BTW do you know if 4 speed frames are much lighter than later versions? I've a titled 1988 frame I got to use with a low mileage '97 883 engine I scored for 500 bucks and it didn't feel as heavy as later versions.

Sorry I don't. The 91 5 speed Evos were only slightly heavier than the four speeds which suggests the frames weren't that different.

Café, Bobber, Chopper, Tracker, Scrambler, Adding power and performance, full TT style fairings, make it loud, custom paint, run it stock or any and all of the above, go for it.
