Default Compensating sprocket.tighten and "pop!"

So.. I have a 1979 1000xlh and yesterday I tightened the compensating sprocket nut with a kinda "wonky" 1/2 air wrench.. should be pretty darn close to the q50-160 specified. Today I came out and just put maybe 80-90lbs. Pressure on it to tighten, and I heard a popping kind of sound that sounded something like a metal tooth or something just breaking off. I stòpped and then turned the socket again (slow and lightly) but no noise or abnormalities. Anyone have any idea of what that sound might have been? It's freaking me out a bit. The bike /tranny should be in neutral, I believe.

A 1979 didn't come with a compensating sprocket though its possible someone put one on.

Are you talking about a sprocket that has a massive spring and isn't tightened with a hex nut?

Never use air impact gun for fastening. Use a TORQUE WRENCH. Much more accurate and less chance of damaging anything.

It's the sprocket in front of the clutch hub basket..(the smaller sprocket that spins the chain that connects the clutch hub basket). I thought that was the compensating sprocket? But I didn't know that there was a spring? It sounds like it may have come from inside the case..but also may very well not have. I just don't know what it could have been, this job (tranny deep dive) has taken me MONTHS and I am extremely worried that I may have f'd something up? If it was in fact, something "poppin' " in place... man!, that would be wonderful!!! Thanks for the replies.

Here are pictures of a compensating sprocket with the spring. I'm thinking you don't have one. Post 3 shows a regular sprocket.

Sometimes these regular sprockets are very tight on the shaft splines. They don't always slide on smoothly. Sometimes there is a popping noise as the nut overcomes the resistance.

Can't say for sure but maybe that's what you heard.

Well, from the answers that I received, my mind has at least somewhat been put to ease.. I've been worried about it all night. I was actually told by 2 different harley head-techs to use an air ratchet though as, the hub turns while you are trying to tighten it (clutch). I did however come across a new impact that you can assign the tourque range via Bluetooth (phone pairs w/ tool) probably a million dollars but, good tools are priceless. Thanks for the weight of my shoulders guys!

No, don't believe the 79 came with a compensating sprocket.

The sprocket itseld is a light interference fit (or should be).

It may well have not been fully home when you tightened it the first time. When you applied sufficient pressure the next day it moved, under pressure, on the shaft fully home.

I normally use a rattle gun on these nuts. But I've been tightening nuts for many years and have a certain amount of feel for these things. Never spun one on a Sportster shaft though.

You need to lock the primary drive with a steel bar. Goes between the motor sprocket and the clutch shell. The Harley Tech's you talked to aren't old enough to learn anything about them. Ironhead Sportsters were around. Why would HD train them on 40 year old bikes?
