I didn't know there was a difference between the FSM and the Owners Man., on belt adjustment, until this thread. Like most, when I bought my '06, the only source for adjustment specs, I had, was the Owners Man. Live and Learn.

The only belt I've snapped was on my '95 Hugger. I consider it a miracle it lasted from new in '95 until late 2002 and I dread to think how many chains I would have gone through in that time. The bike had a 1200 conversion, bolt-in cams, Supertrapp 2-1 and SE carb and had done a hard 70,000 miles at that point.
I think the belt died of old age as it had crazing of the surface and I was only riding slowly uphill in traffic when it let go.

Not yet, but I’m prob pushing my luck with 23 year old belt that has over 40k and a scar from the belt guard screw on the back side. I don’t do burnouts, or bang the 1-2 Shift very hard. My bike will do a modest power wheelie in first (no clutch), but I don’t think that’s hurting anything.

2005 Roadster. The belt broke while sitting at a red light in 2015 at approximately 25,000 miles. Since then, I've changed the belt twice as a cautionary measure. The bike presently has 108,000 miles.

Is there an age you would recommend to proactively change a belt?
Stock '02 belt but it still looks pretty solid so far.
Almost 30k on it.

I've had two belts just break on me on two different Sportsters, one a 883 and one a 1200. Both belts looked fine the last time I had checked them.

Both bikes were bought used with over 40K miles on them and I have no idea how the belt tension was maintained for those miles.

The 883 was about 22 years old the 1200 was 18 years old when the belts broke.

It sucks sitting on the side of the road with a broken belt. Nothing you can do, unless you carry a spare belt (haven't met that person yet), but wait for someone to pick you up and haul your bike home.

Based on my limited experience, I would say if your bike is getting close to 20 years old and has over 40,000 miles on it, the next time you pull the rear wheel off to replace a tire or do some other maintenance it would be prudent to replace the belt. Especially if you have a long trip planned. The $150 you spend on the belt is a lot cheaper than paying someone to tow your bike.

On the other hand if you just ride around town, have buddies with trucks or trailers that will come save your butt, ride it until it breaks.

I’m that one that carries a spare belt when ever I leave my home area. Roadside changes are down to the twenty minute mark. My plan is to change out the belt before any longer trip and pack the old one as a spare. The used one goes on much easier at roadside. When I rode much more aggressively 50-60,000 was belt life now probably double that.
