Default Electrical Diagnostics Manual

Hmmm. Wanted to at least ohm the coil in my search for perfection on my 08. Coil testing directed to the Elec Diag manual from the main HD service book. So, I spent some money....to no avail I might add. I tried to find the section on the coil which is well hidden. Then, they provide the ohm numbers and contact points for the primary side. But, not a thing on the secondary side. So, I wonder if HD sourced this horrible manual from india, or maybe port a prince instead of milwaukee. They want you to replace the coil if the spark is not hot enough using a spark tester (a modified spark plug).....great harley. Cant help but wonder if the boys are turning over in their resting places with this kind of help. On a positive note, I did find numbers for the plug wires.....who would have guessed.

The 2013 electrical service manual shows in the specifications section-

Ignition coil primary resistance 0.3-0.7 Ohm
at room temperature

Ignition coil secondary resistance at room temperature-
1500-2400 Ohms

We also have that info in a sticky in post one of this thread

http://xlforum.net/forums/showthread...986193&page=12

And in this Sportsterpedia section

http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/t...k:evo:engctl01

However, IXL2Relax advised that the higher secondary coil resistance in Sportsterpedia is correct, compared to what I received from Cosmo Kramer and used in the sticky. This is due to the manual using tower to pin B (Shanneba confirm) so tower to tower would be double.

IXL2Relx, if you will reconfirm, I will ask Folkie to edit my 3 year old thread from this

Coil Testing
Dual fire coil testing for Ironheads and Rigid EVO, (except for Sportster Sport 1998-2003)
Coil 31614-83A has two primary screw terminals (+ & -) with twin coil towers.
Primary resistance is measured from + to - terminals, at 2.5 to 3.1 ohms.
Secondary (high voltage) winding resistance is tested from coil tower to coil tower at 10,000 ohms to 12,500 ohms.

Single fire coil testing for Sportster Sport (1998-2003)
Coil 31646-99 has three connectorized primary terminals (- + -), referenced A (front) B (12 VDC) C (rear) and twin coil towers.
Primary resistance is from + to -, both B to A and B to C at 0.4 to 0.6 ohms. For the 1200S (dual plug heads), measure secondary resistance between both front coil towers and then between both rear coil towers at 11,700 to 12,700 ohms.

Single fire coil testing for carbed (ICM) rubsters, 2004-2006
Coil 31655-99 has three connectorized primary terminals (- + -), referenced 1 (rear) 2 (12 VDC) 3 (front) and twin coil towers.
Primary resistance is from + to -, both 2 to 1 and 2 to 3 at 0.5 to 0.7 ohms.
Secondary (high voltage) winding resistance is tested from coil tower to coil tower at 5,500 ohms to 7,500 ohms.

Single fire coil testing for EFI (ECM) rubsters, 2007 and up (with input from Cosmo Kramer):
Coil 31656-07 has 4 primary terminals, referenced, left to right, as A (+), B (+), C (rear) & D (front). A or B to D should measure 0.3 to 0.7 ohm and A or B to C should measure 0.3 to 0.7 ohm.
Secondary resistance: 1,500 to 2,400 ohms, tower to tower

I think Sportsterpedia is much more often referenced, but I do still want to correct the sticky.

One of the reasons for the Sportsterpedia collection & verification of data is that too many threads have incorrect information posted, causing people to wade thru that before getting (maybe getting) the correct answer... Just as true is the fact that much of the Sportsterpedia data is collected (and verified) from the many, many great posts unselfishly offered by the great members here at the XLForum - including SportsterDoc and many others...

The Sportsterpedia accurately states:

Quote:
* The resistance specification in the manual is for one coil only, measured from PinB to either
. . tower on 04-later models. The tower-to-tower measurement would, therefore, be twice that
. . amount since it represents both coils in series. The doubled value is shown above.
From the manual, 04-06 model is listed as 5500-7500 ohms (for one secondary coil)
From the manual, 07-up model is listed as 1500-2400 ohms (for one secondary coil)

Thanks guys....really appreciate your feedback and great technical points......including what I had seen on testing from the two secondary towers.....not good. I did want to be able to dig down on some of these points, but still find the hd manual to be lacking....coil and plug wire testing in two way different sections, and then the quoted specification page is found in the very front with the coil specs..... Appreciate the fact that the info is actually there, but am not happy that there is no organization to the book....oh well. I am very used to dealing with all kinds of manuals, including a three inch thick tech manual on a russian T72, which is concise, well organized, and contains very detailed information for field and organization level service, unlike this nonsense. Again thanks to all, I will spend some time reviewing your links. Also, having used this site a bit now, should have also first gone to the pedia....getting old is no fun.

Folkie advised that he will edit post one of the Consolidated Electrical Advice sticky...and he has already done so.
