Default 4th Gear Whine

I have been riding the bike a lot more on the highway recently and I have noticed that 4th gear really whines. I understand gear whine should be common because of straight cut gears but no other gear whines as loud as 4th. There is a very noticable whine that exists ONLY in 4th gear.

Is this something that is common to the rubbermounts or does it sound like something I should look into further?

Both my Sporties do/did the 4th gear whine thing.

A friends Sporty did it too.

I assume its just the nature of the beast.

My '05 883C does the same thing. Not too worried about it.

Don't know if its common to a rubber mount but I'll bet it is. Has same straight cut gear design as mine and mine sure has it. I think its caused by the Windshield cause its much louder with shield on. In the area we are, you can ride roads for days without getting into 5th gear. Fortunately I only have the shield on if I'm on a Major road and going a good ways. ya get used to it.

Keep a piece of cheese in your pocket. When you shift into 4th gear take a bite of it. Then at least you'll have some cheese to go with your "whine!" Sorry, I couldn't resist!!

The sound drove me crazy on my '05 1200R until I got used to it.

*(&^$% I'm still not used to it!

So I wear earplugs when I know I'm going to be on a radar enforced 55 mph highway.

(I wonder if it's better on the '06s with their helical gears? I wonder if the noise was the reason for the change?)

Its got to be the stright cut and the speed were at in 4th. Fast enough to hear the gears but with a shield that cuts the wind. Once in fifth all we hear is wind or exhaust. Just my $0.02. I hear it mostly when deceling off an off ramp. About the only time I get out of 5th. ;-)

Its a built in gear counter. MoCo put it there to reduce phantom 6th shifts. If you hear the whine, ya got one more. If you don't, well then your in 5th. And they say the Sportster is outdated. Name one more bike that has this kind of technology.
