An Ohio Meet 'N' Eat

There are a few Ohio residents on this forum, and the idea of doing another Meet 'N' Eat has been floating around for a bit but without ever really jelling.

So; I was just reading some drivel on MSN about the best burgers in America, and one of the locations is the Thurman Cafe in Columbus. Now, I like burgers and the idea of Columbus appeals to me as well, because it's pretty much centrally located . As for when, How does Sunday, September 22 sound? (I favor that date because it's my birthday and riding somewhere to get a burger sounds like a nice birthday present to give myself).

Is there any interest? I'll post this on a couple of other threads as well as here to see how things look.

Oh; the address is 183 Thurman Ave (at Jaeger St.)
Columbus, OH 43206

I'll have to check with the boss lady, we have some camping trips reserved in September, if the date is open, count me in.

John, may have a commitment with my youngest boy, if not it would be a great day ride for me. Maybe other "Michigan Posse " members as well?

You can count me in John. Thurman's was featured on Man vs Food I believe even. There is also a Son of Thurman's in Delaware featuring the same menu. Make sure you are hungry as all burgers are 12 oz. except the Thurmanator which is TWO 12 oz. burgers on one bun! If you don't go for that, there are 20 styles of burgers to choose from that I counted...

Also, anytime you feel up for a ride for a food destination between Cinti and Cols., I'm game - could meet somewhere like Xenia, Wilmington or Washington Courthouse. I get hungry quite frequently!

Laura & I would, but for a previous commitment. Definitely worth the ride to Columbus, tho. Time it for a late lunch or early supper. Parking is limited, unless things have changed in the neighborhood, & the place is very popular.

I’m Not Perfect…

I’m Psyched. Sportster Paul will be arriving this afternoon, and that means that tomorrow morning, we’re heading for Springfield. I really hope that the racing is good and that we all have a good time. We’re supposed to meet up with Ourdee in Indianapolis, then the three of us will head west together.

I have a bunch of stuff to get done today before Paul arrives. I have to go get my haircut, clean the house real quick and I’ve got a load of laundry getting clean, (that way, Paul can sleep on clean sheets). And I’ve got to pack the Roadster. That will take 10 or 15 minutes. That’s one area that I’m fairly fast at.

I’ve decided what I’m going to fix for dinner tonight, but I have no idea if I should get something for dessert, or what to get. I doubt it will be necessary, but you never know. I don’t have house guests very often, so when I do, I tend to go overboard.

The title of this Snippet comes from a T-shirt I want to get printed. On the back, it will say, I’m not perfect, but I can still ride a motorcycle at 69 and that’s the next best thing. On the front pocket, it will have the wordless Bar & Shield logo that I’m going to have on my bike when it gets painted Soul Red. I think that will be my birthday present to myself. To give proper credit; Boomerguy on the XL forum came up with that line and I immediately liked it.

OK; I have to get a start on the day. A Short Track and Two Miles – that’s a recipe for a great weekend!

Labor Day 2019

I’m sitting in the Golden Starches in Springfield, Illinois having my morning coffee. I love coming here. By that, I mean I love coming to Springfield for The Mile, and I love hitting Macca’s for breakfast. It’s odd, but I feel like sitting here hacking out a Snippet is my Alone Time. My Personal Space, so to speak. I guess it’s because I did so much of my writing in such a location when I was on the road.

I don’t have enough time to adequately describe everything that’s happened in the past few days, but here are the highlights.

Paul arrived at my house on Thursday we had dinner and watched The World’s Fastest Indian. On Friday, we rode up to Indianapolis and met up with R.D. and the three of us rode to Springfield. We set up camp in the Fairgrounds and watched the Short Track Races. On Saturday, we saw the Mile and it was a very exciting race. As Zac on Badweb noted, the last lap was very spectacular. Jerry and Carol had Matthew’s tickets (he and Gretchen couldn’t make it) and gave them to two friends who had never seen the Mile. I think they were hooked after that race. In all. Our group of friends consisted of me, R.D., Paul, Jerry, Carol, their two friends whose names I’ve forgotten, Cupcake Mike, Greg and Joe who is a local. We met him last May. He’s a Sportster Rider from the XL forum and lives locally.

After the Mile, Joe led a group of us to Bill’s Toasty Shop in Taylorville for a burger for dinner. It was a really good burger in an old time type of hole-in-the- wall sandwich joint. It’s about a half hour away, but it’s a nice ride through farmlands. It definitely gets my approval and I will return.

We got back to the Fairgrounds and hit the sack, only to be awakened by a thunderstorm. A Big thunderstorm. It poured water and flashed lightning and thunder rumbled, cracked and boomed for over five hours. I heard that we got five inches of rain. I can prove that number, but I believe it. Everything got soaked. My Ex-Marine Corps tent kept the rain out, except that the water came up under my sleeping pad through the floor. Poor Paul and R.D. really got soaked. Once the storm passed, the sun came out and we went to work drying everything out. As humid as the air was (and still is), it took most of the day. Of course, the track was a muddy mess, so the race has been postponed until today.

I hope the race runs today. I think it will, but it was foggy last night, and everything was pretty wet at the campground, this morning. It’s still humid, so things aren’t drying out as fast as I’d like.

I’m going to head back to the campground and pack up my tent and sleeping gear, then head over to the track. Our plan is to head out as soon as the race is over and hopefully, we’ll make it home by Midnight.

It’s been a Memorable Trip, for sure.
