Bought a new battery and hope to put it in this weekend. Old one was 7 years old already.

F*c!*n! flat battery.
Closer inspection later reavealed the battery is FUBAR, probably b*ggered from a trip to Spain last summer when the neg connection vibrated loose, shorted out, and melted half the terminal away.
Ordered a batt with more CCA (can't have too many) and consoled myself with fitting a new rear tyre, seeing as I couldn't take it for a ride.

Bought my 1st Harley in 1989, never been without one since, this is my 6th Harley but my 1st Sportster.
Problems encounted with the other 5 ? - Zilch, nada, nuffin.
Problems in 18 months of Sportster ownership ? - Dead battery (twice), broken drive belt (400 miles from home), total loss of rear brake (in the Picos mountains of Spain), trip meter keeps re-setting itself to zero (still don't know why?), clutch seized (probably the cause of the snapped belt), crank position sensor kapput (which at least explains the rough running that's got gradually worse over the last 6 months), and it's the only Harley I've owned that needs the oil topping up between services (normal?). I've never had to change the rear shocks to make a Harley comfy before either, but I guess that's to be expected at the budget end of the (very expensive motorcycle) range?

Just about to go in the garage to fit the new front tyre to match, got a trip to Germany / Czech coming up in 3 weeks, begining to think my 32 year old Transalp might be a better bet!

Bizarrely, even after all that, I love the damn thing. I keep threatening to get shot of it and then it runs well for a couple of thousand miles and I fall for it all over again. I searched around for a low mileage example when I bought it, maybe one where somebody else had fixed all the problems might have been a better bet, but I've added 10,000 miles to the clock in 18 months, despite it being parked up over winter (and a month last summer while I waited for parts), so I guess I must like riding it !

I'm just glad I have the old, reliable Honda as back up,,,,,,,,,,,,
Fitted the new battery a couple of days ago and took her out for 150 mile ride, now cursed by the "carb cough", I know "they all do that" but not at practically every junction
Pulled the plugs when I got home and cleaned off the solid lump of carbon from the front one, presumeably caused by the CPS being faulty.

So,,,,,,,,,
just been out for another 100 miles,,,,,,,,,
and she's lovely.
Pulls like a loco and smooth as butter, genuinely running better now than she ever has.

Looking forward to the hols next week now,,,,,
