The 79 oil tank is a one year only mistake where someone calling himself a MC Designer decided that the oil fill must be hidden. To accomplish this travesty the filler neck was lowered over 1".
80 fixed the filler location. (And probably holds a quart more oil)

Harley oil levels must be checked hot, a cold motor may be full of oil, showing an artificially low oil level in the tank.

They don't call me Ironhead Rick just because I'm hard headed

they should come with a sticker on the oil tank with that message.

How about that. I have always wondered why the filler cap on the 79 was hidden.

Anyway, thanks Rick for your reply.

Earlier today I topped off the oil level to upper mark on the dip stick with the bike hot and upright.

Then indeed when cold the tank oil level seems indeed to be somewhat low.
