Default Tacho Ratio's

Anyone know what ratio the 70- on cable tachs are ?

The Smiths early ones are 4 to 1. I think the Chrono XR750's ran 2 to 1. But don't know the ratio for the cam cover driven setup.

What I want to know is if I can use a 70 on tacho on the mad drive from a 900 ?

Back story:
I have been trying to get my $450 Scitsu tach to work on my sidecar engine but with little to no success. I am about to give up and run a mechanical tach. I have a front mount magneto and there is no drive there.
But I see I can buy the parts I need for a Hunt style drive with the tach drive from Tedd's.
It means spenfing a lot more money and making a new exhaust system But I can't see any way around it. U have a couple Smiths early style that I know will work just wondering if I can run the "easier to see" 70 style tach. Also, I can get then cheap.

I don't know if this helps, and I don't know about the pre 70 tachos, but for 1970 up the cable turns once for every 2 crank revolutions. In otherwords the cable turns once for every turn of the camshaft. Camshaft to cable is 1:1

Ferrous.... on my '71 XLCH...... the calibration imprinted on the side of the tach is stamped --> RATIO 1:2.

I think this confirms what needspeed stated. If needed, blow this view up:

HTH. Cheers !

Thanks guys, thats what I need to know.
I/m pretty sure the early 900 tachs are 4 to 1. I think they made drives with 2 to 1 for some XR's but don't know anything at all about that setup. I'll probably just have to run with an early Tach.

Ferrous, If you found one of these circuit breakers, cheap, for an earley xlh and 70 ch and gutted the weights and points it could serve as a tach drive. 1/2 engine speed.

Yeah, the taach was an option listed for XLH Sportsters. I did have a tach drive distributor years ago. Sold t.
XR's run a tach drive from the magneto hole. They could do this because they ad front mount magnetos too.
Am XR tach drive will drop straight in there but they are asking $400+ for them, ued.
V=Twin are now making replica mag bases and associate ddrive bits for the Hunt style mags and I can adapt one of them to my engine. About $158-60 so a cheaper option.
I'll still have to buy the drive gear that fits in he base, another 50-60 bucks.

But I'm over trying to make the Scitsu work.

Is something like this of any use to you ? A spark plug wire induced digital tach.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/032R-Backli...-/202308396946

or (shipping from China)

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Backlit-Ind...QAAOSw1utaozsv

They might be junk, I dunno. Never used one.

Thanks Doc but Digitals are too hard to read at speed. A needle I can glace at and know "close" to where I am.
Also, the Scitsu is a tach that picks up the signal from the ignition wire. Ans usually they work well. But the Morris Mag I'm using is 9i think) putting ot just TOO much signal. Wprls fine on my 74 with points and coil and even my lawnmower.
Just can't fins that happy medium of too close to the wire or too far away for the thing to work correctly.

Truth is I can't really see the tach when I'm riding. I can't take my eyes off the track long enough to look.
I do have a "tactile" taacho.
When the handlebars grow to exactly twice their normal size I'm at 6 grand.
