Advanced warning: This ride report includes a LOT of 1969 Sportsters!

The GBB Ironhead gatherings were founded to promote RIDING the greatest motorcycle ever invented, the Ironhead-era Sportster. Twice each year we meet in New Jersey to gather with like-mided people to talk, eat, and use our Ironheads as intended - TO RIDE!

But this is the first time that the GBB has ever had a "theme." The GBB was founded by three guys (Magneto Sportster, 16ouncePBR, and Papa Magneto) because we enjoyed riding our Ironheads and all rode 1969 XLCH's, so we had something in common. So last year, as the 50th anniversary of 1969 approached, we decided we should dedicate this GBB to the motorcycle that started it all for us. Now don't worry, we're not turning all future GBB's into some OCC-style theme party, but just this once we decided to honor the 1969 Sportster with "69/50 Fest"!

Let the record show that on Saturday, September 14, 2019, despite the possibility of some "iffy" weather, 11 Ironhead RIDERS gathered to celebrate the most holy day of the Ironhead calendar - The GBB Ironhead Gathering:

[url=https://flic.kr/p/2hfYyGi]

But even more impressively, SIX stock condition 1969 Sportsters were in attendance to celebrate their big day!!!

[url=https://flic.kr/p/2hg2asv]

16ouncePBR's Dad bought this XLCH brand-new in 1969. He literally watched them take it out of the crate! It is still in completely original condition, including the paint.

Magneto Sportster rode this all-original 1969 XLCH in very rare original Hi-Fi Green paint. This bike only has 8,000 original miles and came from the original owner!

Papa Magneto rode this restored birch white 1969 XLCH:

Ironhead Art attended on this "sheep in wolf's clothing," a 1969 XLH that has been given the XLCH treatment:

Here is Monte03's Jet-Fire Orange 1969 XLCH:

[url=https://flic.kr/p/2hg1fPo]

Scrow has owned this 1969 XLCH since the 1980s, and he has taken very good care of it....look how nice the chrome is!

[url=https://flic.kr/p/2hfYzvh]

Not EVERY bike in attendance was a 1969 model, so here are the other fine machines that were brought out for this edition of the GBB:

Tom's Dad bought this bike brand new in 1960 to use as a commuter vehicle. After a few years and a new job, it was relegated to the garage to be used as a pleasure vehicle. Original paint!

[url=https://flic.kr/p/2hg2e1Y]

XRCR Bill brought out this real deal, 1970 XR-750 that he runs with a 1964 XLCH motor in it for street use:

Model H rode down from North Jersey on his 1966 XLCH:

[url=https://flic.kr/p/2hg2dYU]

Paul R brought out a fantastic machine all the way from Southern Maryland. He purchased this 1961 XLH from the estate of the original owner, and it is 100% original, right down to the Skyline Blue paint of the sheetmetal, and the "H" decal on the oil tank. What a fantastic bike!

The final RIDER impressed the heck out of me. Yellowstone Kelly came all the way from IOWA with his 1982 Sportster to join us on the GBB. He said it was on his bucket list, and we were glad to have him and show him around our section of the country!

The GBB isn't ALL about motorcycles, so eventually we headed inside for breakfast before returning to the parking lot to talk more about Ironheads before saddling up for a scenic ride back to Ironheadquarters for a picnic:

Whenever you get a group of Ironheads together, there is a pretty good chance that this will happen:

...and we RODE:

Eventually, we arrived back at Ironheadquarters where MagKenzie and Momma Magneto had set up a delicious picnic for the road-weary RIDERS:

[url=https://flic.kr/p/2hg1cTi]

[url=https://flic.kr/p/2hg5dgf]

[url=https://flic.kr/p/2hg4fUx]

[url=https://flic.kr/p/2hg4dyk]

[url=https://flic.kr/p/2hg2bpF]

[url=https://flic.kr/p/2hg4cuw]

Once back at Ironheadquarters, handed out "69/50 GBB" SWAG for all participants. (every participant got a 69/50 patch and t-shirt) This is a GBB first, but we really wanted to commemorate this special event:

[url=https://flic.kr/p/2hg59RE]

[url=https://flic.kr/p/2hfYxh9]

And Monte03 provided some door prizes for oldest '69 (based on VIN number), longest distance, etc.:

[url=https://flic.kr/p/2hg2a56]

...as well as a gift for the host. Thanks again, Monte...it will look great in the Ironheadquarters workshop!

[url=https://flic.kr/p/2hg59sd]

[url=https://flic.kr/p/2hg5dkD]

[url=https://flic.kr/p/2hg2bbp]

Model H even brought out his copyright 1969, vintage map to find his way home. Good luck to him, because half of the roads around here weren't even built in 1969!!!

[url=https://flic.kr/p/2hfYx2E]

[url=https://flic.kr/p/2hg2b1E]

[url=https://flic.kr/p/2hg2b52]

Next thing we knew, the conversations faded out, the food disappeared, and the RIDERS all saddled up and headed back home. Another GBB was in the books....the 17th GBB to be exact.

I hope that we can continue to hold the GBB for many more years to come. Many have tried to run a similar event, but only the Canadian "Ironhead Rendezvous" has come close to matching the success of the GBB. That is why we STILL consider it the world's premier Ironhead Sportster-related event! That is because of a lot of hard work and planning that goes into the production, so if you attend a GBB in future, please be sure to thank Momma Mag and MagKenzie!

Here is some video footage of the ride back to Ironheadquarters: (click on the actual video to play, not the title in the orange bar at the top)

69/50 Fest: PA/NJ Ironhead Sportster Gathering (Fall 2019 GBB) 9/14/19

If you didn't make it to 69/50 Fest, no excuses. Just get in the garage and start working on your Ironhead to have it ready for the 2020 GBB. You've got about 8 months to prepare!!!!

Thanks for reading,
