Well the brakes decided to take care of the problem for me.

Now I'm looking to upgrade the forks and front brakes. Once I get the settlement from the insurance company and my ribs heal up.

So now the question is what forks and brakes do in upgrade to?

Was riding home from work in rush hour traffic last night. Was riding in the left hand HOV lane of 4 lanes on the interstate. Needed to move over to the right for my exit. Changed one lane to the right, looked over my shoulder for the next lane move (cars in the lane prevented that) and when I looked back forward everyone in front of me everyone was stopped. Ribs on left side of my chest are bruised, no broken bones. Percocet handles the pain pretty well.

Bike is kind of messed up, forks look bent, handlebars are bent, thankfully crash bars and saddlebags took the brunt of the damage so engine, pegs, ect... are fine.

So once I hear from insurance company (who is sending out assessor tomorrow morning) I'll see what settlement is and how much I have to spend on fixing it back up. I think I'll upgrade forks to a dual disk.

Damn, son. At least it wasn't a catastrophic front brake failure, right? Sorry about the situation, hope you're up and around quickly.

I presume this is a 1997 as your profile indicates? If you go with 2000+ forks, you can use newer brake calipers, like XR1200 or VROD/Brembo setups. The forks are 39mm, so they fit the triple trees, just have to watch axle sizes. You can take a look at ReddTigger's thread on his dual Brembo setup.

That stinks! Glad you'll mend.

I needed new fork tubes for my 98 last year so I shopped all over the Internet for prices, then found that the factory Showa tubes from the dealer were within 50 bucks of the cheapest I'd found. I ordered from my local shop and when they came in the parts guy cut me another break on price and they ended up cheaper than anyone else!

Yes it is for my 1997.

That is a good write up ReddTigger did.

I also found this at JP Cycles. But it looks like it uses the old style single piston calipers, and it comes with a 21" front wheel (not sure if that is good or bad)

I'm healing up, way to slowly for my wants.

Now I'm looking around some more and wondering if I would be better off with a higher performance single caliper, than going with the duals. Something like this:

There are lots of options and probably only a few wrong answers. My personal thoughts on single versus dual brakes, really comes down to aesthetics for the majority of Sportster riders. IMO, the only real performance difference between single/dual that most will notice is with repeated braking and heat dispersion. Many single brake setups can lock the front tire, so its repeated heavy braking that really matters. It's rare to hear of Sportster riders complaining about heating their brakes to the point of fade, even when running single rotors. So, for most of us it comes down to prefering the "look" of dual brakes.

There are advantages to staying with a single setup. Obviously cost is a primary one. But, even from a performance perspective, there is a weight savings to running only one rotor/caliper. And, this is unsprung weight so it can make a significant difference (although I doubt many notice single/dual weight in reality).

Having said all that...I'm a huge advocate for dual brake setups. I love the look of duals and I had experienced brake fade multiple times. But, my preference doesn't need to be everyone's.
