Default Tires

I have an 05 xlc with just over 30k and needing a new tire on the rear. HD calls for Dunlop D401 and I am currently running a Dunlop D404. Has anyone run anything else with great results? I'm getting around 10K on rear tires.

In my experience if you're not going to change both tires you should stick with what you have or go with the D401. My reasoning is that other manufacturers tires are going to have a different profile than the remaining Dunlop and that could give some strange handling. Once I fitted some Avons to a Low Rider I had and the handling was completely changed, not bad just different. I've read and believe that Harley works closely with their tire suppliers to get the right handling characteristics.

Everything besides a dunlap....Avon AM and AV series, Pirelli, Bridgestone, Kenda, Shinko, IRC....never ran a Metzler. Anything is an upgrade to the D40X series. And the handling will increase.

Change them how you want without issues. Don't worry about brands or tread patters being mixed.

Had a new Dunlop put on front by dealer when I bought the bike. Rear was almost shot. Dealer wouldn't put one on. Put a Michelin CII on the rear and noticed a big difference. I haven't tried any other brands so I have nothing other than the Dunlop to compare to. Didn't notice anything bad from having different brands on my '02. Only thing I noticed was a lot less vibration from the rear. Just felt a lot smoother but made the front feel a lot more vibration.
