Default How to Bench Test a Solenoid, pic & vid

EDIT #3: See post #24 of this thread for the updated version of the procedure and of the video.

EDIT #1: Ooops i made an error here. You use only two jumpers. Omit the jumper in step 2..

EDIT #2: Ooops another error. In step 1 the jumper runs between battery -ve and the solenoid case, not the short stud.

I'll make a new pic and vid, and edit this post, tomorrow.

Need solenoid, 3 jumpers, deep socket, 12 volt battery.
  1. Jumper from short stud to battery -ve <-- jumper from solenoid case to battery -ve
  2. Jumper from long stud to battery positive <-- omit this one
  3. Place deep socket part way into the solenoid
  4. Momentarily jumper from battery +ve to the solenoid terminal

Dig the solenoid trick and how the socket jumps in... I wish you had this up about a month ago when I was trying to figure out if mine was bad or the electrical had issues... Still good set up for future reference... I see a future stickey...

iteresting procedure,ironmick. +1. yes there are high torque starter's available for high compression motor's. stock starter is quite sufficient for stock motor's.

I received a PM pointing out an error. You use only two jumpers. Omit the one in step 2. I'll make a new pic and vid tomorrow.

EDIT: And a post in the Starter thread points out another error - the Batt -ve should connect to the solenoid case, not to the short stud.

That's what I thought, ground the solenoid body, using plunger touch off the small terminal with positive source, check for continuity between large terminals when field is active, should be 0 resistance between large terminals when activated.

Good point.

So i should hook up the ohmmeter during the test, and watch it while i have the jumper on the terminal? Or i could hook up the continuity section and hear the beep when the socket is drawn in?

I'm interested in how this goes.

The solenoid has two coils inside-- "pull in" and "hold in".

The FSM shows one end of the "pull in" coil is connected to the short (large) stud (which goes to the started motor). The other end of the "pull in" coil is connected to the small terminal of the solenoid. I'd think if you want to test the pull-in ability of the solenoid, you'd want to connect the ve - battery terminal to the short (large) stud, then momentarily touch a jumper wire from the ve + terminal to the small solenoid terminal.

The "hold in" coil in the solenoid has one end connected to the small solenoid terminal, and the other end of that "hold in" coil is connected to the solenoid case (ground). It's my understanding the "hold in" coil comes into play after the two large studs (long and short) are shorted internally by the plunger pulling in. After that happens, both ends of the "pull in" coil will have 12 Volts applied, as long as the starter button is engaged. So the pull in coil will stop conducting electicity at that point. But the "hold in" coil will keep the large internal contacts engaged, and the starter motor turning, as long as the starter button is pushed in.

So this means that the -ve battery cable should be connected to the short stud, not to the solenoid case? And perhaps i should keep the momentary contact on a little longer to test the hold in coil?
