Damn.
That adds more confusion.
This number from a state that has been reassigned legal in all 50?

I once passed on a nice truck for this same reason.
The state in which it was titled allowed the tag purchase without proper title.
Guy said "All you have to do is,,," .... been down that road before.
I bought a beautiful antique Olds and watched the tow truck drive it away from the trade school window.
(edit: on second thought, it was a 1967 Buick Skylark)

That is interesting.
The MoCo spent a LOT of time and trouble with the laws trying to arrange the numbers so they could be traced / not duplicated.
Then along comes some state to erase what they did.

I guess it's business as usual.
'As long as the burden is on someone else's shoulder'.

A frame with a legitimate number will not get tagged.

The MoCo could have cared less about numbering they did it the way they wanted until the Feds mandated a system in 70 which was then later changed to the 17 digit number system now in effect.

Feds didn't have anything to do with the 1962-1969 Odd / Even Rule?
Or was that just for warranty sake?

edit:
Come to think of, that might have been for warranty sake.

Yeah, sounds right.

I've seen a sheet around the net for cops (back then I'm sure) to spot check what the different numbering systems was for different makes/models of bikes.

That's true now, Rick, but it wasn't some years ago, at least in Washington State. Washington state slapped a frame tag with a new VIN on any bike that didn't have a title. Not sure how long that lasted. Nowadays, they title to the original number, whether on frame or engine.

There is no end to the level of stupidity around this issue where DMV is concerned.
I have been on the receiving end of more than my share of this.
There are ways of gaming this also, there are many bikes out there with paper that will not pass half competent scrutiny.

Just look at how many number jobs we see here! And we only see a small percentage of just Ironheads here.
