Primary

Have a little problem, and a question. Is there a inner primary on a 1200 sportster? The reason i ask, is that a chunk of the case broke off, basicly about half of the area behind where the starter bolts on. I was going to use the aluminum brazing rods to try and fix this, but since i need to heat the metal to around 750 degrees i would need to have that off the bike or im going to melt everything around it. And no i dont have the money to take it to a shop, so need to figure out how to do this myself. - Its a pretty good size chunk, and jb weld isnt going to cut it, plus with it being part of what the starter bolts to, it needs to be strong. But i now know how the water keeps getting into my primary. Every time i drained it, the oil came out milky, and i could not figure out how it was getting in there.

Also, if you don't ride your bike for a half hour or so to fully warm it up, moisture never gets purged, and your oil will be milky.

Thanks, never heard that before, it was driving me crazy, that every time i drained the primary, it just came out milky like that

So is tig welding going to be the way to fix this?

Yes but it will be difficult as you need to get all the oil out of the casting so it is very clean.

You need to talk with someone who does tig welding because if it is not clean it will leave posterity that can/maybe let water in.

Well, i ended up taking it down to a welding shop and got it tig welded, in the proces of putting bike back together now, but looks like it did the job. Its time to get back on the road, havent really rode since my accident 1 year ago this month. Had my seat come off on me when i hit the brakes one day, ended up snapping my left arm in half above the elbow, compound, dislocated my knee, was taken right to the hospital and into surgery to get plates put in and a rod down through my forearm, so been a little slow getting the bike back together, and a little gun shy about riding again, but i love it to much to stop.
