that is correct it is 34 and not 54, on the engine sprocket. should have caught that from memory but i did not zoom in my digital manual and typed what i thought i saw. there was an optional gearing also, anywho it is in the manual in section 1a-3

Looking into a bump starter also, found the Magneto needs 75rpm to fire.

I've been through this whole process of designing starting rollers.

What your after is the minimum starting RPM for the engine.

It took me quite a while to find that figure. I'll save you the hassle. It's 400 rpm.

I finally found the figure in a 1954 Packard factory workshop manual. It's funny, but almost no one seems to know this number. I asked every auto electrician I could find. No idea.

Are you going the mains powered or battery route ?

At the end of the day it also depends on what engine you are trying to start.

You may find you need to use 3rd or even 4th gear on some engines to get them to fire.

Here's what I finally built. Bear in mind this engine is basically a full race engine, very high compression on Methanol (Read REALLY hard starting)

I also have a set of "electric" rollers that are a lot lighter, smaller.

But it won't start the Sporton reliably. Not at all if it's cold. And we have 240 volt mains power here.

You need a 2200 watt motor at a minimum.

hummmmm
you got to have a superman foot to get 75 rpm !!

at one firing cycle per stroke, that will be a challenge. what impresses me the most about manual foot and mag is a trip to the moon, carried that scar for decades, forgot to roll to retard position on the ole pan.
oops i miss read the intent!!!

Ferrous, great video. Got a chuckle out of the kids just riding by like nothing to see here happens all the time.
