Here in North Dakota, lane splitting will get you a reckless endangerment/driving ticket. It's even against the law to run side by side with another vehicle, on the interstate, including running 4 motorcycles side by side. This law came about in the early 55mph days because we had such a problem with people obstructing the flow of traffic during rush hour.

What's funny is, up until a couple of years ago there was no specific law for or against lane splitting in California. Some argued that because there was no law allowing it, it must be illegal (huh?). Stupid logic. A lawmaker in socal introduced a bill a couple of years ago that would have outlawed the practice, but the CHP stepped in and loudly announced they would not support the bill and it eventually died. Then the CHP published "acceptable" lane splitting practices and many people complained they were making laws (which was not true), so they deleted the list. They then asked a couple of universities to look into the safety of lane splitting and the reports came back that when adhering to specific rules, lane splitting was actually safer for a motorcyclist than riding between cars front to back. They found that motorcyclists tended to die more when not lane splitting because they were being crushed between cars instead of just being knocked over (my words not theirs).. So the CHP lobbied to have the practice made "officially legal" without any specific rules, but then published an advisory note detailing best practices.

BTW: even before california passed a law "making" it legal, it was always illegal to block someone from lane splitting.

Yes sir, that is absolutely accurate, and shows the actual progression of the complaints from idiots into laws allowing it to shut the idiots up.

Now if we can revisit Pete Wilson's idiotic law requiring helmets I will be happy.
