I don't think it matters Flame - mine has two shields. The metal shield still allows oil in but it should stop debris getting to the bearing.

I used to run no shields because they say the bearing runs freer and last longer, but tell you the truth, I cant keep a bearing in there more than a year average so not sure which works best.
My current bearing I just put in is an MTC-6009-Z2 came in a drag box so who knows.

Metal shields should be fine as they are not sealed as such and allow splash lubrication. However, when I spoke to SKF, their engineers advised me to
remove the rubber seals (2rs) on the Zipper main bearing which they felt were unsuitable inside a gearbox. There are exceptions like the sealed bearings
in BMW shaft drives, but they have special permeable seals.
