1997 Sportster S Questions
Good Morning,
Looking at a 1997 Sportster 1200S. Link to the model is below.
https://www.wildhogsscooters.com/inv...2789-11733870i
From recollection this model came from the factory with 10:1 compression, nitrogen shocks in rear, more aggressive cams. Is that correct? I see conflicting info in various places.
Other question is the model in the link doesnt look like it has the better shocks in the rear. Makes me wonder what shocks they are, why did they get rid of the better shocks. Accident maybe? hard to say. I do know the signal lights in the rear are missing. Asking if the connectors or wires are there for rear signals.
Let me know what you guys think. Opinions. Price is decent, new battery, fluids, etc, Rides and drives fine according to dealer, all other items in working condition.
Looking to get back into Sportsters after taking a break for a while. Carbureted is my preference.

Not a bad looking bike. Shorter shocks may have been installed. You might think they would have straightened the front turn signal for the pics. I like the S dual disc setup.
You should look it over very carefully and test ride. Hopefully the wiring is intact for the rear turn signals. Me? I’d offer $2300.

Yah. I asked about the front signals. They fixed them since the pics were taken. Waiting for a video of the bike running with walk around and to see if wiring is in tact on the rear.
Test ride is tough as I would need to fly there to do it. But your probably right I should probably go there and test ride it give it a look over. Or as you stated. Offer low price to cover issues.
Can anyone confirm the engine specs 10:1, higher performance cam etc on the 1997 1200S model?

The 1996 & 1997 '1200S' models were essentially the same.
From the Sportsterpedia:
http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/s...ection19901999
1996
All model changes include:
* New larger gas tank now 3.3 gal w/rounded bottom edge on 1200 models
* Cast Wheels upgraded to 13-spokes
* New oil tank dipstick (see Service Notes above)
* Improved adhesive for reflectors
* The spoke nipple is a new style, as a running change, which requires a special Torx Plus driver for installation 479)
* New outer clutch release ramp (25409-94A) has the coupler on the inside of the ramp.
XL 1200S:
* Fully adjustable damping front forks and rear shocks with a slight power increase
* Dual front floating disc brakes
1997
All model changes include:
XLH 883 changes include:
* Larger gas tank (3.3 gal)
1997 specs:

The engine configuration for the 1200S was no different than other 1200 models of that year.
1998 specs - Major changes to the 1200S engine were implemented, including the 10:1 compression ratio:

Looks pretty honest to me, priced within reason also
How do YOU like it is the main thing
Winter Park is a nice area, not that it means anything to the bike but you might buy a house while you are down there

+1 I thought it was the 98's that got the 10:1 CR, "W" cams, and dual plug heads.

That's correct.
The 1996-1997 1200S used a standard 1200 motor of the day.

I've been keeping an eye out for an S model, and if that came up near me, I'd grab it in a hurry at that price (assuming basic checks are good....).
Ironically, I was in Orlando last week- would have been difficult getting it home on the Street Glide, though.
It's a nice looking bike. Good luck.
