Thanks, I’ll check it out. There really wasn’t much crud, somehow the hole was completely covered by metal. Looked almost like it was welded over.

When I looked at the pic my reaction was that it looked like welding slag plugged the hole. Were the cases welded at some point?

In the pic above, the trough Mike mentioned is at 10:00 to the main shaft bearing race. Make sure also that there are no holes in the trough to let oil out before it runs down to the m.s. bearing. I had this issue and it ruined my mainshaft and bearings+race.
