Question 1971 Ironhead front drum wheel / axle spacing

Hi, this is my first post. I am building a 33.4mm front end. I have the original trees, tubes, fork sliders, and hamburger wheel. I'd like to know the size of the stock right side axle spacer. The one that goes between the brake drum backing plate and the fork lower. The left side is spaced by sliding the fat right side of the axle in or out.

Thank you!!!

Might help. Good luck.

I don't know off top of my head. I see a lot of ????? in the 1973 section when it comes to spacer sizes.

Edit: Might tell the moderators here to move this thread to the ironhead section. That is where the short frame 900 forum members hang out.

Hey rokytnji,

thank you for replying! Please correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that 1973 is when the MoCo switched to 35mm forks which changes everything. Thanks for the tip, I'll message the moderator.

There is no right side spacer indicated in the Factory parts manual. My '71 right lower fork goes against the brake backing plate. There is a grease retainer part # 43636-52.

I was just pointing to the relevant sportspedia page for ya.

You can use sportspedia and ronnies parts finder to answer a lot of questions you may have later on.

Though ronnies does not go back as far as 1971

Whitewalls,

thank you for confirming this! I pushed the wheel against the ride side fork lower and let the left side "float" in to where it needed to be to keep the forks parallel and everything looks centered and works great. I didn't notice how much the backing plate protruded to the right before but now it makes sense that there is no spacer. Thanks again!
