Another nice report, thank you. And those Studebakers were definitely distinctive. My Dad had a buddie with a 1957 “Golden Hawk”, the model with the supercharger.

Good roads over there. Probably excellent weather right now as well. Looks like a fun day.

As for Studes, I spent some time at the original Studebaker proving grounds last year (since purchased by VW), just outside of South Bend. Wonderful facility with some nice grounds surrounding the area, mostly owned and unkept by Bendix. The origins of the area are clearly laid out in the groves. Check out the view from above!

Iron Mike --- If you visit again, post up some pictures...

CLICK for a larger aerial picture, from 1952, which shows the extensive test roads on that property:

The test roads are there and still in use.
Pics are generally frowned upon on places like that. Cell phone cameras get taped over on entry with tamper proof tape. Likewise on laptops.
The site is used by civilian companies as well as our armed forces.

There are original bits of history still throughout the facility, which I’ve learned are well protected by the local historians. I spent some time with some of the old timers on the property and was given the history tour straight from the horses mouth.
As far as history, this is one of my top favorite testing facility. To me, rivaled only by the time I spent at Allison plant using the test dyno and hot/cold soak rooms. There I was graciously toured by another old timer through the “basement “ below the new production floor. It was built just atop the podiums which were the test stands for all of the P-38 engines. It was very cool, but eerie in the same right. Seeing that equipment, in a dark, damp, low ceiling basement. Massive tapered concrete pedestals, silently resting after serving a very important workload. Now discreetly covered and silenced by a modern assembly plant.
Must have been pretty loud down there.

A pic from some archives taken at Allison. The production floor now covers these massive stands. The floor level is just below top of stands as they protrude into new testing rooms above. Mostly housing test stands for massive transmissions used in variety of applications. Most leaving the facility wearing camouflage.

The other pic is one of the newest dyno rooms on the property (ssshh!) This particular one used for R&D specifically. Quite the set up. Just as a scale, those pedestals with all of the holes are about 5 feet tall and are about 3” steel. They are the tie down points for vehicles strapped to that dyno.
For the curious, there are 5-6 more rooms, just as large, surrounding that dyno which can control environmental conditions from -90deg F to +170deg F.

It was a gorgeous day in mid-September to be out riding.

My brother and I were riding northeast of Harrisburg thru a number of small towns.
Over the mountains and thru the valleys, by the creeks and next to the river.

We very much enjoyed that 100+ mile ride and put a new
group of pictures into My Motorcycle Chronicles.

Yes, we stopped for ice cream!
