Hi Folks...

Sorted the solenoid today... Some previous fool badly assembled the movable contact washer inside the solenoid so it couldn't spring back once engine had started... T'was sort of "floating" and did touch the fixed contacts on the plastic cover, hence sending the lecky motor in a noisy spin... AS ALWAYS... the only thing I did not check proved to have a problem... NEVER TRUST ANYONE!!!

Nice acquisition Patrick. Initially, I passed over the 2013 link included with your initial post. Revisiting your post I just spotted the link and found the pics in post #32 (from Hopper). I have a 1968 XLB and this is the 1st time I’ve witnessed another bike of the same specification. Many parts I thought were custom or not-true-to-part, may actually be correct. So I don't railroad your post, I’ll post a new thread to show my observations - there may be a few others that might find the deviations from XLH specification of interest. Good luck and happy travels with your new wee beastie.

No probs, Boonoorong,

You can write here, unlike some here, I don't mind drifts and meanderings... It's like a long river on a flat plain, plenty of turns and hesitations, but if the end goal is discussing ironheads, that's fine by me...

Not quite on the road there due to OEM S.M. lecky drawing having the fork terminal plate drawn rotated 180 deg which meant I confused ignition post as lighting post and vice-versa so all came at once on the key ignition position...

Also dumped the Zenith carb.... I only had the std spiral which meant next to impossible to get a clean shut position after 2 days of trying... So, sleeved the bar to fit a 70's H-D twist grip and mounted an early Keihin carburettor... Purist beware, this is NOT a so-called resto...

BUT this is NOT as bad (since it's reversable...) as re-painting/re-chroming/changing half the parts of your bike for some ephemeral clubs' self-appointed judges' clique when the OEM tarnished finishes could have been saved with plenty of TLC and elbow grease.

I'm also skint at the moment, can't afford a new tyre for the front, so temporarily mounted the H-D conical race brake front wheel from the XLR-TT.

I also dumped the idea of fitting the early 57 tank, the gas outlet is really too near the carb and might even be a problem with its contemporary Linkert DC carburettor... No wonder it did not last long!!! (Which begs the question... Do judges know that and how many early 57's are fitted with the right "wrong" tank???)
