XR1000 Fuel Tank part number?
Hello,
I have a 1984 XR1000, slate gray. I somehow developed a leak in the fuel tank, the fuel leaked and ruined quite a bit of paint on the left hand side of the tank. I do not have enough touch up paint to patch it.
It is my understanding that the XR1000 was sold with either the tiny 'peanut' style tank or the larger 3.something tank. Is that correct?
On my bike, the tank is about 3.something gallons and has the fuel petcock on the left hand side of the tank. I am not at all sure if that is correct or not as the XR1000 pictures that I have seen show the petcock on the right hand side of the tank and the tanks in the pictures I have seen look like the same size tank that I have.
Does anyone know the correct part number for the fuel tank(s) that were stock for an 1984 XR-1000 or a source for correct slate gray paint? If I cannot find the paint, my thought was that IF I have the correct tank for my bike, I just paint it gloss black and put XR-1000 decals on it.
Any recommendations / tips / insights would be most appreciated.

sorry to hear about your gas tank, it will be like finding a needle in a haystack to find one for sale. as far as I know the standard XR1000 came with a 2.2 gallon capacity gas tank, but there was an option to buy a 3. something (i can't remember exactly) larger tank.
My fuel petcock is on the right side of the gas tank, I thought they all were that way. I have a small bottle of slate gray touch up paint and it has a paint code of 98600-GK written on it, I really hope you can either repair, or find a replacement tank for your bike.
let us know if you can get it sorted out.
Regards
Roy

Thanks for the reply. I just now found some rattle can paint in Slate Gray at eharleyParts.com. I ordered 2 cans. Hopefully, I can blend it in so it is not all that noticable.
According to my parts manual from Harley, the part number of the tank *might* be 61023-83A, but it is not clear at all if that is for the peanut tank or the larger tank and the picture in the parts manual shows the petcock on the left hand side of the tank. So, maybe the XL of that year came with the larger tank? The XR1000 addendum in the parts manual does not list a separate tank for the XR1000, but it does list the dual output fuel petcock with part number 62165-83. Since it does not show a different fuel tank for the XR1000 so I assume that means that it is the same tank as an XL of the same year.
Maybe I am being too anal. My bike is never going to be a 100 point show bike (unless I can score a set of DelOrto carbs to replace my flat slide Mikunis) and replace my chrome plated primary and timing gear covers with XR1000 covers and decals, and replace the speedo with the correct year, and strip the bike to the bare frame, blast it and paint it, and,and,....
