I confirmed that the black plastic (bakelite) housing for the original coil is cracked across the width of it.

Is there a recommended replacement? I'm currently just looking at the used OEM's on the 'auction site'...

Points?
They need a 5 ohm coil.
Should be an easy find in the take off bin.

Yes, sir- points!

Without a good coil (one is on the way), I won't attempt to fire it up. In checking the plug wires, I have continuity on the wire that runs to the rear cylinder, but none going to the front? Time for some new plug wires.

I carefully installed a new braided neg cable, cleaned the securing point to the frame. Cleaned up the pos cable ends, and installed the fresh Deka battery...

Made sure that all ign and switches were OFF- connected the neg cable and after 28 years, kind of expected all kinds of pops and smoke due to age and rats.

Grabbed a fire extinguisher, and clicked on over to IGN on the switch that you guys helped me to install.

Got an instant bright headlight and a tail lamp!

Time to put 1qt in the kidney tank, prime the oil filter, pull plugs, and see what kind of oil pump system I have. Am I forgetting anything else?

Starter Relay troubleshooting- after studying Mick's Starting Circuit guide, let me know if I'm on the right track..

At the handlebar switch, I have a good break in contact at the on/off switch, and the START button, however, I have no clicks or movement at the relay. Dad said he was having a hell of a time with that relay when he parked it.

If I jump both large posts on that relay, the starter turns over without issue, and pistons move, and sumped oil belches.

Also- I do not have 12v at the solenoid with or without the START button depressed.

Am I looking for the aftermarket cube relay that a lot of you guys are referring to, or is there something still to test at the handlebar switches?

I'm wondering if you're confusing the relay and the solenoid. They look similar. On a '75 both have 2 large and one small lug. The wiring schematic shows the positive cable from the battery going directly to the solenoid so you would HAVE to have 12v at the solenoid with or without the key or start button.

I'm not confused on the relay vs. solenoid, but I may be wrong about my findings on the volt meter! I've investigated a lot of the electrical components today...
