Once, and only once, I had an issue with my current air cleaner where I was riding in heavy rain from Dallas to Louisiana on I-40 my bike was starving for air and would not go over 65 mph. My current aircleaner is a RSD with the element exposed similar to the Outlaw

Does my logic (or lack there of) make sense?

Yes, what you said makes sense...the 587 is a tad lower profile than the 425, and the 587 is the lowest profile A/C on the market (that we know of).

Also, there is more surface area total, and more out of direct rain on the 587 than the 425. A rain sock can help too.

I have ridden in some heavy rain with a 587, with and without a rain sock...and have gotten a few little sputters on heavy acceleration, but it was raining so hard that I could not see past 40 feet in the daylight.

With a rain sock, and in rain that I could go 70+ mph, never had a sputter or any "starving".

I have ridden it several times in a hard rain and haven't had any performance issues with it (but not even close to the extent you would subject it to). Just to give you some feedback as a user.
Yes, good note. On my Alaska trip I ran a 587 with a bobber cover...not so much for the rain, but to help with the nasty calcium chloride dust up in the Yukon...I did not want it accumulating on the filter element and then getting rained on...that stuff turns cement like when it gets wet.

Thanks gentlemen. As I said, it only happened to me once so I am not that concerned. At the same time if there is an easy solution I'd like to plan for it.

Never cared for the look of a rain sock and based on experience I don't think I need one.

Customer Review from our website for our Outlaw Hiflow 587 A/C System:

"My sporty came with an A.N. big sucker. It looked the part but that was about it. A new set of plugs looked like garbage shortly after install. I switches to the DK A/C shortly after changing the plugs, they cleaned up right away and the bike ran smoother. I use the breather bolts and it takes a bit to stop thinking the bike is catching on fire when you smell the vent fumes, you also have to give the A/C back plate a wipe now and then but that's fine by me. The engine gets nothing but clean air and all the crap is sent to atmosphere.

Everything fit perfect and is built to last. Less money for a superior product, that's what DK gives you.
" -Justin

Another customer review:

Great addition to Iron 883
"I installed the HiFlow 587 at the same time as a set of thunder torque inserts. The different in torque was immediate. The motor runs smoother and continues to pull through the gears. Once again the quality of the parts are top notch and fitment was spot on."-Bob C (Posted on 1/7/2018)
