Default crank case breather

I took my 86 883 out on the freeway for the first time and it built up enough pressure in the oil tank to blow the dipstick out and my wife was following me and said it was blowing smoke out the pipes. I checked the plugs they are burning clean and checked the compression and have 150 psi on both cylinders.
any ideas where to look next

Did you check the oil before going for a ride? Was it low? Did you add oil to bring the level up?

Two things immediately come to mind.
First as others have mentioned, adding too much oil.
Sitting for awhile, oil will most likely trickle down from the oil tank into the engine.

Topping off the oil tank on a cold engine can result in adding too much oil. \
This can result in overage in the tank and spillage from the cap, or blowing the cap off as is here.
This could also result in blowing oil out of the air cleaner (assuming the vent is plugged into the A/C) which could trickle down the pipes and appear to be coming out the pipes as the heat burns it.

Another thing is to check that the breather valve is not stopped up.
The pressure will go somewhere if it's not out the breather.
Typical signs of this being stopped up would be blowing oil / cap out the tank and / or sweating / leaking rocker box gaskets.
You should be able to remove the oil cap, blow into the oil tank and feel air come out the breather line.

, that’s where I’d be looking after making sure the oil level is correct.

On some engines I’ve worked on, I’ve seen the almost the entire contents of the oil pan pushed out the dipstick due to a plugged breather. (Big mess)

I went and looked up the 86-90 breather system in Sportsterpedia. I’d want to be sure that fumes are exiting the breather and manually test it if in doubt.

Details on the breather system and umbrella valves here:

Not sure (yet) if he overfilled, but it's easy to do and does what he describes.

What needs to be emphasized is that the time to check your oil level is right after a ride, not just before.

And, make sure the bike is sitting straight up when you check it, not on the jiffy stand.
