Mycle1000, I remember the adds, for the trade in value.never knew anyone to take them up on it though,as everyone I knew loved their Sportys, and kept them. The MoCo knew what they were doing.
I was 17 when the XLX came out,and though my Dad had Harley's as I grew up,and still has his late 50's Sporty, the '83 XLX was the bike that made my mind up,of what kind, and model I wanted some day. Something about the way it's layed out,it just looks perfect.

the ads i remember on tv were for the new ('86 and '87) sportsters. if you traded them in on a big twin, within a year or two i think, you'd get back the $3995 price as a guaranteed trade-in value. i know a couple guys that took them up on the offer.

I never took them up on it. I had my 87 for 10 years and 27000 miles.
Still kicking my self for selling it.
The 07 I have now is nice but it's just not the same.

Files opened fine for me. And .. I have a 1979 XL in my garage with the Siamese exhaust. Also has Andrews Y cams, well worked heads and a S&S shorty.
