There must be something wrong with how the main cb is wired. When I disconnect 85 the starter is still engaged. I also double checked the relay is still good. The main cb has the copper terminal directly to + on the battery and the other terminal has 3 wires, 1 to 30 on the starter relay 1 to ign switch and 1 to batter of voltage regulator.

The wiring from the CB is correct. When you disconnect the #85 wire from the relay ( OEM wire color is black) you are eliminating the possibility of the handlebar button and wire from being the cause.

There is always 12 volts at the relay whether ignition is on or off. So how are you stopping the starter when it continues to run?
If it stops by disconnecting one of the other relay wires then it would seem that the relay is stuck closed and is at fault.

If that doesn't stop it then maybe the solenoid is stuck closed, in which case you would have to disconnect the battery?

Of course this assumes the wire connections between the relay and solenoid are correct.

It does not sound like the relay is holding the starter on.
A 77 has the old style starter.
If the battery is not the best or fully charged or if the cables are not the best,
the reduced voltage to the starter will cause the current to be very high and the solenoid will not release.

Can someone email me a copy of the wire diagram in a PDF? I am in Germany and having issues accessing this link... Thanks

Is that the right one? I'm a little confused as to which is the correct version. I thought the later version was the one with generator terminal labels?

I do not know which link you are using, but this link goes to my OneDrive. This is from 2010. I do not know if it is most recent version...

Here are a couple of pics that show the difference between the two.

This is the original one (I downloaded this on 22.01.2009):

This is the later revised one, which russzx6 posted on 23.02.2009 (and I downloaded that day):

So, which is correct?

The difference I see is that the top diagram has F and A not labelled, the bottom diagram has then labelled.

The diagram on my OneDrive has them not labelled.

The diagrams are too difficult to compare for me to see any other differences.
