I would suggest tossing the points and moving back into the 20th century with the stock ignition.

Flame, I thought about that, too. First I’m going to try to get the carb 100% settled then maybe take a look at that.

Sportsterdoc, now I see. Thanks! In that case, I’m not in the military. Much respect to those who are, though.

Of course, in this case, the stock nosecone ignition modules were subject to premature failure (and HD abandoned making more replacements) - and might be the reason the PO put in points instead...
http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/t...k:evo:engctl01

To change now, would be to use the popular Ultima version:
http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/t...econe_ignition

-or- other similar design... Or something totally different (more $$$)...

rocketmangb, thank you so much for the thoughts. I know shipping anything over here is ridiculous. It’s always killing me. If you’ve got anything you’re willing to share, I’ll cover the shipping though. And even if I can’t put it to use myself, I’ll pay it forward and put it in the hands of folks who need it when I come across them.

IXL2Relax, that is food for thought indeed. I have to admit that I’m much more comfortable with old school ignitions (I’m mainly from the school of VWs, Shovels, Knuckles, etc) but i know things have been changed over the years for a reason. Hmmm, gotta give the iggy a think or two I guess.

Thanks for sharing all your info with me guys, this is all the kind of stuff I love!

Take care,
-dan

If you keep the old points (I've adjusted many in my life of riding) make sure the weights are free and your timing is able to advance. That would cause carb farts too.

rocketmangb, that all sounds very useful. I would appreciate any of it. I’ll shoot you a pm.

Flame, thanks for the advice! The weights seem to be moving nice and freely for now. I’ll keep an eye on them at least every oil change though.

Thanks guys!
