Lots of things... and most of them are expensive.

S Model comes factory with:
Flat top pistons (10:1 compression)
Dual plug heads Buell - Lightning heads (total of 4 plugs)
Dual coil - single fire ignition using a MAP sensor instead of a Voes
Remote ignition module using a cam sensor plate
'W' cams

Other than that (probably left something out), it's a standard 1200 (engine-wise).
If you want to improve on that, These things are what the MoCo did to improve a standard 1200.

I'd like to say they balanced out the performance plan on this engine but I own one and I can say it is not a high performance engine (well it could be if you just got off a moped).
But, it has performance upgrades from a standard 1200.

1250 and 1275 cylinders do not require splitting or boring the cases.

As I said earlier, the dome in the heads are not matched to the pistons (this is stated in detail on Hammer Perf website)
You can't do much machine work to them without taking too much meat out to get there. (this is also stated at Hammer Perf).
So, it is better to source some better heads (Hammer has a good detailed page on this)
Which ones? Depends on what your wanting them for. If you just buy the most expensive set of heads (cost more means better right?) then you won't be able use your factory parts in them because they either won't fit or are not strong enough for the increased pressures (this means new valves and related parts).

OK, you got new heads. Good to go right? Wrong....
If these hot new heads are factory machined to be closer to the piston than factory heads were, you've just reduced the area inside the cylinder between the piston and the valves. If the valves open up too far, you've just busted a hole in your piston with $1200-$1700 or more of brand new valves in brand new heads.

If you have stock flat tops now (they may have already been changed by now) and buy heads with a bigger chamber than the ones you have, you've just lowered your compression,,,, sorry bustert, which equates to a less compressed ball of air in the chamber which makes the EXPLOSION inside the chambers weaker.... equaling less power.
Batta Boom equals Hell Yeah!

Let's say you did more homework beforehand and checked that clearance first, realized you needed thicker gaskets and new pistons. Now you've spent a lot more money but didn't have an "experienced" machine shop do the work on the heads. More money blown.

It may seem like we're picking on you but these things are important when considering changing engine parts. What works doesn't always mean it works well.

Plenty of people will change out certain parts for 'performance upgrades' but fail to do the homework to make sure everything that is put together stays together.

Hammer and NRHS (sorry not familiar with others) build these engines and parts on a daily basis and they also love selling parts so they are eager to speak to folks wanting to buy them. These two shops I have mentioned have a long history on this forum of treating people fairly and they have a stake in making sure what they sell does work.

They are also experts in what will work as well as what will cause you and your engine grief.

Again, there are plenty of combinations stated in S model threads and by all means, read research, do the homework.

Buying parts to make it go fast usually ends when the wallet gets tight though.

And then there's me. You really shouldn't listen to me. I'm just the drunk in the corner.

I had a friend who had a nova with a bottle. It exploded his engine....
Then he went two stage and just about lost his freakin mind.
It left my little 400 ponies pretty well once he figured out how to hook up.
We settled things on back roads back then. And, times have changed.
I'm too old for that kinda stuff now though.

A bottle on a bike? Not me. Still got the nerves just not the same body..

Thanks,

You didn't mention how many miles on motor. Ring seal and valve springs pressures. Relatively easy check and modest price.

Thanks to all who've taken the time to offer helpful suggestins and advice. Bike has 11,000 miles. Sounds like going to a 1250 kit really needs to include new heads to get it all to work together. I need to find out if that means ditching the two plug head design also. More research is needed thanks again.

I'm running SE Pro heads with dual plugs. I didn't want to change out my ignition. I got Hammer Perf to machine the heads for the second plug. I believe there are SE Pros with 2 plugs already but don't quote me on that. You can check that out from HD or call Hammer and they'll know.

Here are some pics of the standard and then with the second plug:

Note that these heads are shaved and may require shorter pushrods.

That also depends on the cams your running.

Like a scalded dog when I'm not tinkering with it (in my opinion of course). I pulled it back down to address some things I didn't have money for the last go around.

I got rockers, rocker lockers, new cam bushings on both sides, I want to do the upgraded lifter pins, and some other things I can't remember right now.

Life gets in the way but I just installed the new cam bushings. Just gotta ream them.

I've been taking it slow.

edit, the heads were a definite improvement. Impressive to me anyway.
