Couple of suggestions.
I too ride with back pain (crushed thoracic vertebrae) and I rigged up a backrest, altering it several times til I got it comfortable. Once you have the seat and peg relationship sorted - and I modeled that on the most comfortable armchair I could find - hold your arms out in front of you where they are most comfortable and have someone measure where you want the bars to be (paying particular attention to your wrist angle).
You will find in practice that the bar position will need to be an inch or so forward of your most comfortable position to allow for wind pressure, even with a screen.
The other thing is to beg, borrow or steal a ride on a bike with footboards. Not for everyone, granted, as some do not like the look of them, but for back pain they are oh so wonderful. I recently bought a Triumph America that had them on and I automatically thought 'They've gotta go'.
I needed to ride that Triumph 600 miles home, and, long story short, the footboards are still there. In fact I have pulled my Sportster to pieces to fit footboards and to mimic the seating position of the Triumph.

Cheers, Will

Thanks for that info IXL. I'll hold onto that info.

I though about replacing the riser with something that had more pull back but then Ill have a speedo mod to do.

I ordered some 8" rise mini apes and I'll bolt to the stock riser for now and see how that works out for me.

I ended up going with a 4" Novella wire extension kit and 4" longer 1 pc. front brake line (from Dennis Kirk) because it pulled everything except the turn signal wires too tight. Clutch cable and throttle cables were fine, too.
