I wish people who don't know how to properly work on motorcycles just would step away from the tools (like the fellows who owned the one I now have). Guy told me that the left sidecover "just kept falling off", so he stuffed it in the saddlebag. Uh huh.
I moved the Neg. Battery Cable so the battery would slide all the way out. You just have to make sure the Neg. cable runs along the top edge of the battery and run down close to the Pos. cable. Good Luck

So last week I ordered a new "genuine" H-D battery directly from the MoCo, which was supposed to be delivered late this week. During the night I received an email saying that the item is "no longer in stock" and that my money was being refunded.

Does this mean that the exact fit H-D branded battery is no longer being produced? I guess I'm back to finding some spacers for the terminals of my aftermarket battery. Geez.

That just means there's an idiot working there. Try a different dealer, or source. H-D will be supporting our Sportsters for 10 years, if they hold to their old parts availability policies. Some dealerships are staffed with people who know nothing about motorcycles & can only go by "the book", or whatever their computer screen tells them.

Well, it's the H-D Online Store, not an individual dealer telling me that. Would be odd if they stopped producing the exact fit battery for a very popular motorcycle. I don't know what date range that battery fits, though.

Here's the stock & Reference sections of the SP on batteries:

http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/t...ec02#batteries

http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/techtalk:ref:elec03

I'm certain that the equivalent battery is still being produced by others. Just check the dimensions & buy a known good brand.

Oh, I have a healthy, relatively new battery on the bike, but I wanted the H-D battery for the flush-mount terminals, so I could run the ground and positive cables straight down, as intended. I'll have to find some spacers and longer screws so that I can use the battery I have. I measured it, and its dimensions are the same as the H-D battery. A previous owner made a mess of the terminal ends on the cables. I have a new positive cable (NLA from H-D, but found on eBay) here, and I've ordered a new ground cable. Just thought I could make a nice clean installation using the "genuine" battery.

Just stop by your local hardware store & buy some short brass spacers. That's all that should be needed for the existing battery.

There were a couple of spacers included in one of the bags of miscellaneous items that came with the bike, so I cleaned them up and used them. I carefully bent the ground cable terminal end so it could be mounted in the original way (cable vertically). Installed my new positive cable, so I didn't have to mess with that one. I connected my Battery Tender pigtail to the starter end of the cable (positive) and the other end to the ground stud at the back of the primary case, so I wouldn't be adding any wiring to the battery terminals. Zip-tied the ground cable to the battery post after tightening it, and as I installed the battery, it was obvious why this is important.

Bottom line is that after a lot of tedious fiddling, the battery is fully seated in its compartment and I was able to install the sidecover.

Without the photos and guidance in this thread, that sidecover would still be sitting on the bench. I've never seen a battery installed this way before, so the "right" way was not obvious to me.

Thanks!
