Looks like my '73. Same seat. Raked. Had 10 apes after I replaced the pullbacks. Same thing. Different color.

No one has mentioned how many trouble free miles they have ridden there Ironheads.
I have not owned one, but back at end of the 70's AMF, I bought a new lowrider Shovel big twin , a friend bought a new Ironhead sporty. we both loved our bikes & loved riding. we both had troubles. he kept the ironed about four years. I only just sold my Shovel ten years back, had ridden it 600,000 mile ( 1 million kilometres ) in Australia, rebuilt motor many times , but was reliable when I sold it. just the 4 speed box, not as strong as the 5 speed. have had a twin cam Dyna carb but, I think my best Harley is the 03 XLH I have now ( did a full rebuild to make it mine, but looks stock, all in motor & gear box) I only keep one bike at a time, & ride it a lot. new big twins too heavy to ride like I like to ride. but everyone to what he enjoys! side note, old friend who bought the ironhead when I bought the Shovelhead now owns two 09 Buell Ulyseese & loves them. in Australia here. Another friend has a 1958 IronHead looks great no trouble as does not ride it.

54,000+ miles on my '83 so far. Other than standard maintenance items like tires, chains, cables, etc., I've put one new clutch in it right after I bought it (it was screwed up by the previous owner), two voltage regulators, had the kickstand mount re-welded to the frame, and replaced one cracked piston (my fault for running too much spark advance). Lots of trouble-free miles in between those hiccups...

If it ain't broke, don't fix it (especially if you don't know what you're doing). Most Sportster problems are owner-induced.

Default Go For It!

New to motorcycles, new to sportsters, new to forum. Bought my Ironhead (1980 Sportster XLS) a little over one year ago. Had never even ridden a motorcycle before I bought it. It is comical how lucky I got considering the bike wouldnt start when I bought it. Local dealership has an absolutely genius mechanic who knows these bikes and doesnt mind working on them. Long story short; have put over 7500 miles on bike this last year. If you buy and Ironhead get ready to spend some money. Be prepared to do maintenance; it is an old bike and needs some TLC. These bikes are survivors. They have earned every scratch and dent. If you can find one that runs and is reliable, to paraphrase Clark Griswold, you are going to have so much fun you'll will need plastic surgery to remove your smile!
PS - Have plenty of loc-tite on hand.
