hey thanks for replies! points ignition, no EI. yeah gonna stop pick up coil on way home from work, batt should be charged up by then. ill install new coil. after thinking a while, recently i did reroute/ replace the points wire to the coil, which leads to the possibility of a pinch in that wire where it could possibly be grounding out, which would also mean no spark, but would it make it spark when switched off?

The way the circuit works is: +12v is on one side of the coil and the points are connected to the other side. The points will ground the coil in order to charge it - but it won't discharge until the points open and the coil reverses energy to send that spark across the plugs (using the secondary circuit)...

This means, if the wire going between the points and the coil is constantly grounded, then the coil is always being charged but never discharged... So, when the ignition switch is turned off, the coil finally gets to discharge (Ahhhhh!) and the plugs get one spark across them...

Naturally, if the coil is defective, it could internally be shorted even if the points (and the connecting wire) are doing their job... (I suspect this might be the case)...

Good luck - let us know if the replacement coil resolves the issue - Be sure to reset your points correctly...

(Side Note - the condenser, as mentioned, isn't necessary to make a spark but is used to drain off the extra energy at the points at discharge so they don't get burned as quickly.)

update... thanks again for all your replies, no spark condition caused by short in points to coil wire grounded to rear exhaust, rerouted and replaced the wire made sure would not happen again with some additional strategic zipties.bike is firing normally Many thanks!

shorted points/wire will trigger coil when you drop the power.,will not fire coil during cranking.
