Here is the Clutch Diaphragm Spring:

This is the Snap Ring:

Your Middle Picture -

It appears the Snap Ring broke.... Although your last picture of the new clutch install looks like the snap ring is in the right place...

See this thread:
http://xlforum.net/forums/s....php?t=2006082

Was the Diaphragm Spring installed with the fingers out or in?

See the picture at the Sportsterpedia for the 1991-later clutch:

The black piece at the 2 o'clock position is part of the diaphragm spring. I installed it in the same orientation as the stock one I took out.

Do you have any pictures of the clutch with the primary cover removed? That shows all of the clutch pieces after the failure?

Did you have any difficulty compressing the Diaphragm Spring? Did you take a measurement of the stack height when installing the new frictions & steels?

Did you have trouble putting the Snap Ring back in place? Did the Spring Seat come back into place without an issue?

I'll get back on it this weekend. I only took the inspection cover off. No, it wasn't very difficult getting the clutch installed. I used the Motion Pro compression tool which worked well. I was careful not to over compress the spring. I checked the number of steel plates, friction plates I removed and that checked out with the HD shop manual. The snap ring came out and went in without much problem. This was the original clutch I was replacing so the components haven't been subjected to much handling.

The Barnett extra plate kit replaces the middle HD spring plate that riveted together.

Default I took the primary cover off..

and the retaining ring fell in the oil below. The Barnett spring looks ok. The retaining ring got loose so how.

I posted some new pictures:
